Iron Craft '14 #2- Get it Together

This week for Iron Craft we were challenged to either create something to help us get organized OR we could organize our craft area. I choose the second option.

When we moved to Atlanta at the end of July our new house had what was advertised as a second "walk in closet" on the second floor. This room was not in a bedroom but it was actually a space in the hallway. I immediately said it would not be a closet but it would be my craft room. Well that area become not only my craft room but also my office. In other words- no crafting was happening which is evidenced by my lack of crafting. I decided this challenge was the perfect time to clean it up.

I don't feel like there was any crafting involved but I did get it to where I can now hem my son's pants.
BEFORE....

AFTER....

The room is tucked around a corner and hard to photograph but is a great  little space. Sorry about the sunlight. The only time I had for photos was in the morning when the sun was coming in. I have plans for better shelves, a curtain (I have had the fabric since August- now I have the space to sew) and to move the "office" stuff to another room.

I hope to be back soon with more Iron Craft Challenges from my clean space.

Iron Craft #19- Monsters, Witches, Ghosts- OH MY!

Halloween! It is a favorite around our house.  However, as Thing 1 and Thing 2 get older the focus on my making them a costume is changing.

These are a few of my favorites from 2007 and 2008.

I have material for making a table runner but my sewing machine is broken so that is out. Walking through Target the other day I saw my inspiration for my project. They had ornaments painted like eyeballs- but I was not going to pay what they were asking for them so I decided I could make them myself. I had the perfect vase to put them in.

This project came together pretty easily. You will need something to be the eyeball itself.

I found white ornaments at Michaels and glitter paint.

First you paint the pupil. You need to wait of the paint to dry between each step. Notice the paint will change color as it dries.

Then add the eye color.

Then red for the veins.

Iron Craft #17- UFO's

Wow! I have been away from here for a long time....since I last posted we made the decision to move our family to Atlanta, GA. My husband was spending most of his time at the firm's Atlanta office when he was not out of the country so after a lot of thought we decided it was time to be together. It was a fast and furious pace with schools here starting August 7. There was no time for crafting and boy have I missed it.

When I read this challenge I thought it was something I could do but totally forgot about it until I saw Kathy's post with her project this morning. I realized that I had actually done a project yesterday that would fit the challenge. I had the supplies long before we moved. Just needed to unpack the sewing machine.

When we told the Things we were moving we said that they could decorate their rooms and choose their colors. Thing 2 is OBSESSED with orange. He wanted to paint his room orange but we have now compromised on gray with an orange stripe. (Still need to complete that). I however found this great bedding at Target- one set was an orange pattern and the other gray stripe.  Thing 2 does not use the flat sheets so I decided that I would use the 2 flat sheets to make a duvet cover for a comforter we had.

I took the 2 sheets and sewed them together like a big pillow case. I slipped the comforter in and with the help of my mom, we attached the comforter to the duvet with knots.

The duvet can be used either side. photo-13

 Thing 2 loves it!

I hope to be around here more often. Just need to get a new sewing machine- reverse is not working and I had it fixed once. Off to research new machines!

Iron Craft #5- Green or "Green"

This week's challenge on Iron Craft gave us the option of either using something green or being "green" and reusing/repurposing something we already had.

I decided to use some old pillows that I had and re-stuff them and make new covers. The old ones had seen better days and with the addition of a new puppy last year somehow the dog got the corners of the pillows when Thing 1 and 2 were watching him. Of course according to the boys "not me" did it.

This was a pretty quick challenge but of course I waited until the last minute to finish. I took the old pillows, threw away the cover but added more stuffing to the original stuffing.

I then made a simple "envelope" type of cover.

I made 2 pillows but I finished the second one after it was dark out and did not take a photo. I love the new updated look and was happy with how easy it was to make them.

Iron Craft #3- Hearts and Flowers

This week Thing 2 is the lone representative for our group. Every year for the past 4 years on Valentine's Day he has wanted to make his cards for his friends at school. I love that he wants to do homemade versus the store bought ones. There is nothing wrong with the store ones, but I am glad that he likes to spend the time to make them.

I am off for a long weekend in Florida with my mom and dad.  Maybe Grandmabee and I can do the next Iron Craft together.

Iron Craft - Orange

Orange, the theme for this week's Iron Craft reminds me of that knock, knock joke that ends with "orange you glad I didn't say banana?"

Orange is not a color that I use much or have a lot in my wardrobe. Seeing that my sewing machine seems to be on the fritz- the reverse does not work all the time- I guess I need to take it in -I decided that I wanted to knit something. Off to the knitting store I went. I came across a scarf that I really liked, it was with bigger yarn (i.e.: it would be quick for me to knit) and I found some yarn that I loved.

I know, I know- not a lot of orange but if you look really close there are a lot of orange tones in it :) Just the right amount for what I normally wear.

Thing 1 also has decided to join us this week. For those of you new to Iron Craft, when I started the first year of Iron Craft is was due to the asking of my oldest, Thing 1. Since then Thing 1 and 2 will join in when they are able to. This week Thing 1 made a clay sculpture of the Master Chief's helmet from the game Halo 4. The inspiration is the orange on the mask. I take his word for it that the helmet is what he says it is... I am not a gamer.

For those of you that were participating in Iron Craft last year when we had the felt challenge I said that I would show my finished product. Well, I finally downloaded the photos off of my camera. I give you Thing 2 the iPod ready for trick or treating.

This week I finished my project ahead of time but as usually I am rushing on Monday to get the post done. I was actually done and had it set to post when Thing 1 arrived home from school and said he did something... off to Kathy's to do a photo shoot.

Iron Craft '13- #1 Cotton

I had promised myself that if I joined Iron Craft again that I would do better and get my projects done BUT here I sit the night before it is due, using photos from my phone because I finished late last night and didn't have time to do a better photo.  I did however get it done.  There was a time when I was about to give up but it is done.  And there is always the next one to try and get done early.

I was excited when the theme for this challenge was cotton. I had this fabric that I was wanting to use and had been wanting to make the great yarn sacks that Kathy had made for Christmas gifts. Now was my chance. I love how this turned out. It was a simple and quick project from me which was good since I was down to one day.

I also wanted to make a tote bag to go with this but that will have to wait.

Hopefully I will be back with more time to spare next challenge.
