Iron Craft - Orange

Orange, the theme for this week's Iron Craft reminds me of that knock, knock joke that ends with "orange you glad I didn't say banana?"

 Orange is not a color that I use much or have a lot in my wardrobe. Seeing that my sewing machine seems to be on the fritz- the reverse does not work all the time- I guess I need to take it in -I decided that I wanted to knit something. Off to the knitting store I went. I came across a scarf that I really liked, it was with bigger yarn (i.e.: it would be quick for me to knit) and I found some yarn that I loved.



I know, I know- not a lot of orange but if you look really close there are a lot of orange tones in it :) Just the right amount for what I normally wear.

Thing 1 also has decided to join us this week. For those of you new to Iron Craft, when I started the first year of Iron Craft is was due to the asking of my oldest, Thing 1. Since then Thing 1 and 2 will join in when they are able to. This week Thing 1 made a clay sculpture of the Master Chief's helmet from the game Halo 4. The inspiration is the orange on the mask. I take his word for it that the helmet is what he says it is... I am not a gamer.





For those of you that were participating in Iron Craft last year when we had the felt challenge I said that I would show my finished product. Well, I finally downloaded the photos off of my camera. I give you Thing 2 the iPod ready for trick or treating.



This week I finished my project ahead of time but as usually I am rushing on Monday to get the post done. I was actually done and had it set to post when Thing 1 arrived home from school and said he did something... off to Kathy's to do a photo shoot.

Iron Craft #29- Buttons

Who ever thought that crafting in the summer would be SO hard. Wow. Since the end of June we have either been out of town or had company the whole time. Makes it hard to get in some crafting.

We did have some fun along the way. My brother and his family plus my mom and dad came up to the Great White North ( I type this as the heat index hit 120 today and 100 is the forecast high tomorrow) to celebrate our parents 50th wedding anniversary. It was a great time with lots of fun to be had.

Gooseberry Falls

I was able to sneak in just a wee bit of crafting time to get started on my challenge for this week. While out shopping at Michael's I saw this crocheted scarf that looked like those paper chains we all made as kids. Since I can't crochet yet, (it's on my list to learn) I thought how about knitting some "loops" and adding a button hole and buttons to make a group of links to count down the 25 days to Christmas. I finished 2 loops on Sunday (too hot to be outside) and plan on doing a few a week so I am ready for Dec. 1. This was super easy even for me a beginner knitter.

Grandma also was back in action this week. Check out what she did here.

The Things are still around but with all the travel and company they have not gotten in on the action lately.

I am off to find some cool space and wait for next week's challenge- hope I can come up with an easy idea- another weekend of company on the way :)

Challenge #9-....and the Oscar goes to.....

Well, our movies are not Ocsar winners but they are winners at our house.

Thing 1 and I are the only ones participating this week and we chose Harry Potter and Toy Story 1. I took the easy route this week and finally finished my golden snitch from a few weeks ago. I know, kind of cheesy but I could not think of anything to do- it is weird but I don't really have an all time favorite movie. My boys are lucky to have lots of Harry Potter stuff around thanks to the great scarfs and mittens knit by Kathy. I thought it was perfect backdrop for the photo of my snitch. I followed Kathy's pattern for the golden snitch but I am not happy with how the edges of my knitting turns out. I think I need some help there- it always tends to be too loose.

Thing 1 on the other hand loves all movies it seems. But for this week he settled on Toy Story 1 and the little green army men. He chose to make these out of clay and they turned out awesome. He wanted a whole army of them but they took more time than he had this week..... but I think they turned out great.

These little guys measure about 2 1/2' inches tall, are formed out of clay and then baked. My son would spend all day working with and molding clay if it were not for school and homework. It is so fun to see what he creates.

Looking forward to the next challenge- maybe it will be something that all of us can do. Who knows?

Challenge #4- Get Cozy

This week the Iron Craft challenge was Get Cozy! That is something we understand here in the Frozen Tundra when the low on Friday morning hit -16 degrees. I decided that I was going to knit my cozy but decided that I would do a twist on it and make one for my beer. With it so cold outside the thought of holding a cold beer was not appealing to me. This way while watching the Packers make it to the Super Bowl my hands stayed nice and warm.

Thing 2 quickly embraced the challenge and had his planned out. He used felt and embroidery floss. I helped with sewing part of it together but he did his own stitching. He is very proud of his project and brought it everywhere this weekend.

Thing 1 has had a rough week and did not participate. It was the end of the semester at school and studying took most of his time and then over the weekend he was hit with a nasty fever and spent most of his time sleeping. He will be back next week.
